It presumably started around the 11th century as a landlord court.<\/p>\n<p>From a rural village in the early Middle Ages, Delft developed into a city, that in the 13th century (1246) received its <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"City rights in the Netherlands\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/City_rights_in_the_Netherlands\">charter<\/a>. (For some more information about the early development, see <a title=\"Gracht\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gracht#Delft_as_an_example\">Gracht<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The town&#8217;s association with the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"House of Orange\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/House_of_Orange\">House of Orange<\/a> started when <a title=\"William the Silent\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_the_Silent\">William of Orange<\/a> (Willem van Oranje), nicknamed <a title=\"William the Silent\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_the_Silent\">William the Silent<\/a> (Willem de Zwijger), took up residence in 1572. At the time he was the leader of growing national Dutch resistance against Spanish occupation, known as the <a title=\"Eighty Years' War\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eighty_Years%27_War\">Eighty Years&#8217; War<\/a>. By then Delft was one of the leading cities of <a title=\"County of Holland\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/County_of_Holland\">Holland<\/a> and it was equipped with the necessary <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"City wall\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/City_wall\">city walls<\/a> to serve as a headquarters. <a title=\"Battle of Delft (1573)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Delft_(1573)\">An attack by Spanish forces<\/a> in October of that year was repelled.<\/p>\n<p>After the <a title=\"Act of Abjuration\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Act_of_Abjuration\">Act of Abjuration<\/a> was proclaimed in 1581, Delft became the <i><a title=\"De facto\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/De_facto\">de facto<\/a><\/i> <a title=\"Capital city\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Capital_city\">capital<\/a> of the newly independent Netherlands, as the seat of the <a title=\"Prince of Orange\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prince_of_Orange\">Prince of Orange<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When William was shot dead in 1584 by <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Balthazar Gerards\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Balthazar_Gerards\">Balthazar Gerards<\/a> in the hall of the Prinsenhof, the family&#8217;s traditional burial place in <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Breda (Netherlands)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Breda_(Netherlands)\">Breda<\/a> was still in the hands of the Spanish.
